    About the data

    • Source: SBA 7(a) FOIA data, file as of June 30, 2026.
    • Acquisition loans are 7(a) loans the SBA marks “Change of Ownership.” Counts start in fiscal year 2020 (October 2019) and leave out cancelled loans and restaurants (NAICS 722). Each loan counts in its SBA project state; with several states selected the numbers are combined, and the typical loan and charge-off rate are recomputed on the combined loans.
    • Typical means median. Charge-off rate is the share of the industry’s FY2020 to FY2023 7(a) loans in the selected state or states that were charged off; “—” means fewer than 10 loans.
